"At the beginning, I was a little nervous because I knew everybody was going to go out fast," O'Brien said after running in her third state meet. "This was the most competitive year and the fastest (field)."PEORIA - Megan O'Brien did her homework before Saturday's Class 3A state cross country meet, and that left the Lockport junior a bit uneasy.

No doubt about that: O'Brien ran a 17:06, which was 15 seconds faster this year than last. But she finished nine places farther back in 14th place.

"I was hoping for top 10," O'Brien said. "But I ran the fastest time I've ever run, so I can't ask for much more."

The Porters, who have three juniors, two freshmen, a senior and a sophomore in their top seven, finished 13th with 338 points.

"We wanted to be top 10, but that didn't happen this year," O'Brien said. "But that's OK because we all ran the best we could and all of us are coming back except for one next year."

Also in the Porters' top five were Stephanie Sanders (79th, 18:02), Samantha Stanley (99th, 18:16), Courtney Correa (116th, 18:27) and Bianca Wiemeyer (139th, 18:38).
